New York City and photography—two things that never fail to inspire me. This week’s Sunday Spotlight feels especially close to my heart because it combines one of my favorite hobbies with one of my favorite places in the world. I’m often asked where the best photo locations are in NYC, and while there are countless spots worth mentioning, I thought I’d start with a handful of personal favorites. Some are iconic, others are tucked-away gems, and a few shine brightest during certain seasons.
This list is for anyone who loves exploring beautiful corners of the city, whether you’re capturing them for Instagram, a photo album, or just your own memory bank. I’ve also included photography tips (for those of us who prefer fewer people in the background) and styling suggestions to make your photos pop. Consider this Part I of a series—I’ll be sharing more beloved spots, including NYC classics like the Brooklyn Bridge and Top of the Rock, in the near future!
Belvedere Castle: A Fairytale in Central Park
Yes, there really is a castle in the middle of Central Park. Every time I visit Belvedere Castle, I feel like I’ve been dropped into a storybook. Nestled atop Vista Rock, this little stone castle has sweeping views of the park, the Turtle Pond below, and the city peeking through the trees. It’s whimsical, romantic, and completely unexpected.
At the moment, the castle itself is under renovation and closed to the public, but you can still capture its charm from across the water. And even if you’re not taking photos, it’s worth a stop to simply enjoy the view or rest with a book on one of the nearby benches.
Photography Tip: Since there’s a small fence around the water, it’s easiest to shoot waist-up portraits or position yourself on one of the nearby rocks to capture a full-body look with the castle in the background. Bring a friend to help with framing, especially if you want the full effect of the lake-and-castle view.
Styling Idea: Light, ethereal outfits—flowy dresses, soft pastels—bring out the fairytale vibe.
Brooklyn Botanical Garden: Spring in Full Bloom
There are few places in the city that feel as magical in spring as the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Each year, from late April into early May, the cherry blossoms explode into color, transforming the space into a sea of pink and white. Walking beneath rows of flowering trees feels like stepping into another world—a dreamland that’s as serene as it is joyful.
I visited several times last year during peak bloom and was moved each time by the beauty of it. The blossoms don’t last long, which makes the experience even more special.
Photography Tip: The gardens can get very crowded during cherry blossom season. The trick is to arrive early—ideally right when the gates open at 8 am. The light is soft in the morning, and you’ll have a better chance at capturing the rows of trees without large crowds in the background. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the grandeur of the blossoms stretching endlessly above and around you.
Styling Idea: Lean into the romantic setting with shades of blush, cream, or lavender. Flowing skirts or dresses pair beautifully with the blossoms.
Casa Magazine: A Hidden West Village Treasure
If the gardens are sweeping and cinematic, Casa Magazine is all about character and charm. This independent magazine shop in the West Village is one of my favorite hidden gems. The exterior alone—windows filled with stacks of colorful magazines—makes for an eye-catching backdrop. Inside, it’s floor-to-ceiling print heaven, with publications from all over the world neatly arranged in a cozy, narrow space.
There’s something about Casa Magazine that feels quintessentially New York: a small, unassuming storefront that’s both stylish and steeped in personality.
Photography Tip: Inside can be a little tight, so be mindful of the space and considerate of the shopkeeper. I always ask before snapping photos (he’s wonderfully kind!) and try to plan my shots in advance to keep things quick and respectful. A 35mm lens works well indoors to capture the mood without losing detail. Outside, the window display makes for a great full-body or street-style shot.
Styling Idea: This spot has a more editorial vibe, so think chic and urban—structured blazers, denim with a twist, or anything that feels a little artsy.
Why These Spots Stand Out
What I love about these locations is how they showcase NYC’s range of personality. Belvedere Castle feels like a slice of Europe dropped into Central Park. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden blooms with nature’s brilliance in the middle of a bustling borough. Casa Magazine embodies the quiet, stylish creativity that thrives in the West Village.
Together, they remind me of one of the best parts of living in or visiting New York: the chance to stumble upon places that feel like they belong in completely different worlds, all within the same city.
Final Thoughts
This list is only the beginning. New York is filled with photo-worthy moments, from iconic landmarks to tucked-away corners only locals know. My goal with this series is to highlight both sides: the places you’ve seen on postcards and the hidden treasures waiting to surprise you.
If you’re planning a trip or simply looking for inspiration to explore your own backyard, I hope this gives you a starting point. Bring your camera, your favorite outfit, and most importantly, your sense of curiosity. You never know what magic you’ll find around the next corner.
Stay tuned for Part II, where I’ll share more iconic and beloved spots—including some classic NYC must-visits that deserve a place on every photo lover’s list.
